Instructions • Database Construction Labs As the saying goes, “If it wasn’t recorded, it didn’t happen.” Learning to understand the internal workings of a database provides you with X-Ray vision into the bones and heart of an organization; by learning what is and isn’t recorded it shows you what is most important to the organization’s survival and how daily work processes connect with organizational mission to produce community impact. • Database labs provide step-by-step instructions on the fundamentals of human service case management database construction. Each class member will use these tutorials as a guide in constructing a database following the template. Databases will be submitted at several stages of construction and assessed on the basis of how well they incorporate skills taught in the labs. • The labs are designed as video clips rather than typewritten instructions to provide greater support and to enable class members to work on their labs at times and locations convenient for them. Since internship work and scheduling can be demanding, this course operates on a flexible online-hybrid model. We will work together in one lecture per week and you will be able to conduct your lab periods either in the lab during the times reserved for this course or from home or elsewhere (providing you have the necessary computer setups). • In order to learn to apply the skill set developed in this course the schedule follows a pattern as follows: • Practice- The first Tuesday you see a lab will be your opportunity to practice it (either alone or with colleagues). The deliverable for this will be a typed or handwritten list of instructions listing instructions for each of the main steps of the lab in as much detail as you need to be able to complete the lab. • Teach-The Thursday after your practice lab day a group of students will practice teaching the key parts of the lab to the class. Each member of the class will sign up to participate in only one teaching day. The deliverable for this will be a team effort in which those signed up to teach that day will use a team effort to accomplish the following: a. standing in front of the class and leading them through an interesting or important part of the lab; b. explaining how you might apply what you learned in this lab toward your final project; c. with the help of the professor fielding questions about parts of the lab that members of the class find troublesome; and c. having some members of the team walk around the room to assist people who are following along with the instruction. • Test- The second Tuesday you see the lab is your chance to test yourself. You will complete the lab completely on your own without the help of colleagues or the professor. The deliverable for this is handing in a digital copy of the completed lab when requested. Test labs should be exact replications of the labs you watch on video – i.e. what you submit should look exactly like what you see in my example (unless otherwise instructed) • Final Database • This is the culmination of your database lab work in which you apply the lessons learned to a database you design to keep track of something at your internship site. It must include the following at a minimum: • 1 Entity-Relationship (ER) diagram • 2 tables • 1 relationship • 1 form • 1 subform • 1 report page with at least one chart (such a pie or line or bar chart) • You will present a tour of your completed database during the last weeks of class and then submit it.
