  7. What are we going to do? • Text • Topic-based discussions • Class Lessons • Formative Feedback • Assignments

  8. Assignments/Requirements • 30 hours Classroom Observation • Praxis/VCLA • Weekly Readings • Weekly: Class Lesson (+ reflection) or Reading Response • Teacher Self-Portrait: 6 posts, final draft, reflection • Observation Report • Final Exam

  9. All assignments are due at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesdays • LATE WORK POLICY: Assignments in this course are time-sensitive and interrelated. It is essential that work is submitted on time.

  10. Late Policy • Please submit all course assignments by the due dates listed on the course schedule below. If extenuating circumstances preclude an on-time submission of any assignment, please contact the instructor prior to the due date to explain your circumstances. The instructor may provide extensions if appropriate on a case by case basis. Unexcused late work reflects an inappropriate disposition for a teacher and may impact a student’s grade and or ability to continue in the course.

Attendance Policy • Active participation is essential • Every class member is expected to contribute • Student responsibilities include listening to and sharing with classmates + supportively critiquing their ideas and work • Professional demeanor expected = respectful open-mindedness and active engagement • Following instructor directions, refraining from off-topic conversation, and engaging only in course-related use of personal technology

  12. Attendance Policy Cont • Students who miss more than two absences may suffer an overall grade reduction for each subsequent class missed.

  13. Two Very Important Course Requirements • 30 Hours of Observation • PRAXIS

  14. Observation – sign up TODAY • Observe 30 hours in your licensure area • Must be signed up by Sept 8th (if not, drop the course) • Can visit multiple classrooms /teachers • Must be arranged through TES http://education.odu.edu/tes/ • Specific schools and teachers can be requested (comments box) • TES will send a confirmation email • Must be completed to pass 301 • Must be in an accredited school (public or private) • Dress and behave professionally (Don’t be a “no show”!) • Call school, visit if necessary, to arrange schedule • Submit time log and eval sheet for credit (posted on BB)

Praxis Core (not Praxis I)/VCLA (Teacher Exams) • Must TAKE (not pass) this semester to pass 301 (but, must pass Praxis or VCLA to be admitted to DCOE) • See Bb for accepted combinations of exams • Now all computer-based • Need-based fee waiver offered for Praxis (apply immediately!) • Exemptions (must submit documentation) • Adequate scores on SAT, ACT (see BB) • Documentation due in one month!

  19. 2 truths and 1 lie • Think of three things about yourself: two that are true and one that is a lie • In a group of 3: Introduce yourself with your 2Ts and 1L. See if your classmates can detect the lie. • Afterwards: One of you will introduce us to your group including one thing about each of you – one of which is a lie. We’ll try to guess which.
