  1. Suffixes Make sure you write down all the suffixes since your homework is based on finding one word for each suffix and use it in a sentence.

  2. Suffixes A suffix is a word part that can be attached to the end of a base word or a root word to form a new word. prefix+base word+suffix

  3. There are two kinds of suffixes. inflectional suffixes: makes nouns plural (car --> cars) changes the tense of verbs (work - working - works - worked) changes the adjective’s degree of comparison (smart - smarter - the smartest)

  5. Another kind, derivational suffixes, are added to a root or base word to change the word’s meaning or part of speech (see chart next slide.)

  10. For example: My daughter seems to be defiant when I specifically ask her to do something.

  11. My daughter seems to be defiant when I specifically ask her to do something. The word defiant is made up of the suffix-ant, which means “inclined to” and the base word defy, which means “resist.” By combining the meaning of the two, the reader can determine that the meaning for defiant is “one who is inclined to resist.“

  12. For example: February 3rd was the coldest day of the year, so far.

  13. February 3rd was the coldest day of the year, so far. The word coldest is made up of the base word cold and the suffix-est, which changes the degree to “most”. By combining the meaning of the two, the reader can determine that the meaning for coldest is “the most cold”.
