Introduction • The Interagency Emergency Health Kit 2006 (IAEHK 2006) is the 3rd edition of the kit launched in 1990 • The kit consists of 2 sets of medicines • a basic unit for PHC workers with limited training • a supplementary unit for professional health workers, physicians • The composition is based on standard treatment guidelines • STGs for basic unit given in Annex 1 – 3 • Modules for malaria, PEP are included unless there is a request for exclusion • RH, TB, HIV, STI, Vaccines and nutritional needs not included • Does not contain equipment for resuscitation and major surgery

Updating the kit ….. • Procedure for updating the kit endorsed by the Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines in 2007 • WHO / PSM acts as secretariat of IAEHK Group • Members include UNICEF, UNFPA, UNHCR, ICRC, IFRC, IOM, MSF, PSF, EPN and Merlin • The IAEHK Group verifies whether the content is in line with the WHO Model list of essential medicines • Streamlined revision procedure similar to updating the EML, to ensure wider consultation, evidence based approach

Time lines and key dates ….. • Review of experiences with kits • Questionnaires • Analysis of comments received • Consultation on process for review of applications, structure of the kit • Submission of non EML medicines to EML committee • Children's medicines • Publication IAEHK 4th Ed IAEHK group meeting July 2008 Oct 2008 deadline inputs EML committee March 2009 EML committee meeting IAEHK group meeting July 2009 Feb 2010 submission for printing IAEHK publication June 2010

Updating the EML ….. • The Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines meets every two years • Last meeting took place in Sept/Oct 2007 • Deadline for inputs to the March 2009 meeting is beginning October 2008 • Guidelines for submissions for inclusion, change or deletion can be found: • http://www.who.int/medicines/services/expertcommittees/essentialmedicines/exp_com_essmed_meetings/en/index.html • Of special interest is developments around children's medicines

Model Quality Assurance system for procurers of pharmaceutical products • Procurers should have a quality assurance system when procuring pharmaceutical products • Physical resources, premises, personnel, equipment • Documented policies, standards and procedures • Adherence to requirements in all activities • Pre-qualification is one aspect in quality assurance • Product related assessments • Manufacturer related assessments • Ensuring quality throughout the supply management chain See: www.who.int/entity/medicines/publications/ModelQualityAssurance.pdf
