Introduction • The Interagency Emergency Health Kit 2006 (IAEHK 2006) is the 3rd edition of the kit launched in 1990 • The kit consists of 2 sets of medicines • a basic unit for PHC workers with limited training • a supplementary unit for professional health workers, physicians • The composition is based on standard treatment guidelines • STGs for basic unit given in Annex 1 – 3 • Modules for malaria, PEP are included unless there is a request for exclusion • RH, TB, HIV, STI, Vaccines and nutritional needs not included • Does not contain equipment for resuscitation and major surgery
Updating the kit ….. • Procedure for updating the kit endorsed by the Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines in 2007 • WHO / PSM acts as secretariat of IAEHK Group • Members include UNICEF, UNFPA, UNHCR, ICRC, IFRC, IOM, MSF, PSF, EPN and Merlin • The IAEHK Group verifies whether the content is in line with the WHO Model list of essential medicines • Streamlined revision procedure similar to updating the EML, to ensure wider consultation, evidence based approach

Updating the EML ….. • The Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines meets every two years • Last meeting took place in Sept/Oct 2007 • Deadline for inputs to the March 2009 meeting is beginning October 2008 • Guidelines for submissions for inclusion, change or deletion can be found: • http://www.who.int/medicines/services/expertcommittees/essentialmedicines/exp_com_essmed_meetings/en/index.html • Of special interest is developments around children's medicines
