Academic Writings and Citation Styles • In academic writing, whenever we use someone else’s works, ideas, theory, quotes, methods, data, etc. we must cite the original source • Citation styles are the rules that govern on how we format these citations • There are many different citation styles set up by different academic bodies or publishers. The most commonly used ones include the APA style, MLA style and the Chicago style

What is RefWorks? In short, RefWorks is a web-based software that helps you organize your citations and prepare your reference list / bibliography: • Create a personal database online • Import citations automatically from Library catalogues, online databases or web pages you find on the Internet • Organize and manage references • Generate in-text citation, bibliography or reference list in the citation style of your choice, including APA, MLA, Harvard, Chicago style and more • Use it anytime, anywhere, any devices where there is internet access.
First Time User: Create Your RefWorks Account • Library Home Page E-Resources RefWorks Icon (http://proxy1.library.ln.edu.hk:2048/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/refworks2/?r=authentication::init&groupcode=RWLingnanUL) • Click Signup for an Individual Account on the Left Panel • Fill in required information – Must use Lingnan Email address

Group Code • Off-campus access RefWorks requires Group Code. • It is emailed to you when you set up your account; • Or get it at Library web page: http://www.library.ln.edu.hk/eresources/refworks/group_code.html
Adding Data to RefWorks • Direct Export from Library Catalogue or online databases • Import Filter (Copy–and–Paste) • RefGrab-It Adding Web pages • Create Records Manually
Use the Export to RefWorks button at the full display of a library record: Direct Export -- Library Catalogue
Major E-Resources withDirect Export Function • ProQuest (including LLBA, MLA, Philosopher’s Index, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO and Sociological Abstracts, etc.) • EBSCOhost • Emerald • JSTOR • LexisNexis Academic • ScienceDirect • Google Scholar
Direct Export -- LexisNexis (1) At the result list or article display screen in LexisNexis Academic, look for the icon for Direct Export to RefWorks
Direct Export -- LexisNexis (2) Click OK to confirm adding data to Electronic Source Related Fields in reference(s). • If you have already logged in to RefWorks, the results from LexisNexis Academic will be immediately transferred to RefWorks, otherwise, you will be asked to log in. • After import is completed, click the Edit Imported References. • Enter LexisNexis Academicas Database, type http://www.lexisnexis.com/in Links field; then click Save Changes.
Direct Export -- LexisNexis (3) (Global Edit) Now click View Last Imported Folder and select Global Editicon.
Direct Export -- LexisNexis (4) (Global Edit) • Select Source Type under Field to Add Data. Then choose All in List , set Source Typeas Electronic and click Add Data.
Direct Export -- LexisNexis (5) (Global Edit) Click OK to confirm adding data to Source Type in reference(s) Type "EDIT ALL" in the box and then click Edit References to confirm that you wish to edit all references. A “Completed” message box will be displayed on the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Finally, you can click the “X” icon to close the Global Edit.
Direct Export -- ProQuest (1) • At the Search Results in ProQuest, select which citations to keep by marking the check boxes • Click Export • Choose RefWorks and then click Continue • If you have already logged into RefWorks, the selected ProQuest records will be imported to RefWorks immediately; if you haven’t logged in, you will be asked to login first. • Under “Edit Imported References”, add the name of the database (e.g. ABI/Inform Complete or ProQuest Research Library) and then click Save Changes • Click OK to confirm adding data to Electronic Source Related Fields in references • Then click View Last Imported Folderand select Global Edit • If you are using online full text, then change the Source Type to electronic (follow the last steps in the LexisNexis session above); if you need to get the full text from print copy, there is no need to change the Source Type

Import by Copy-and-Paste -- Multiple Records from Library Catalogue(1) • Search Library Catalogue by keywords / subject / author / title, etc. • Save multiple records on results list or Mark individual records on single record display • Click Marked List button to view previously saved / marked records. • Choose MARC Format and Output to Screen • Click Submit button • Ctrl-A to select all; Ctrl-C to copy to clipboard
Import by Copy-and-Paste -- Multiple Records from Library Catalogue(2) • Now Switch to the RefWorks Session (or open a new window and login to RefWorks) • Select References Import • Select From Text • Select Import Filter/Data Source = MARC Format • Select Database = All MARC Formats • Paste (Ctrl-V) the clipboard contents to the input area below • Click Import

Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (1) • RefGrab-It is a plug-in to be installed to your web browser. It helps to gather web page information to RefWorks. Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (2) 1. Download RefGrab-It within RefWorks under the Tools pull-down menu. 2. Right click on RefGrab-It to bookmark link. 3. Click on Bookmark This Link.
Add Web Pages to RefWorks -- RefGrab-It (3) • A hot-link appears after the RefGrab-It link is installed. To cite a particular web page, first open it in the web browser and then click the RefGrab-It button. A separate window will pop up. • Select the reference and click the Import To RefWorks button to transfer the information to RefWorks.
Create Records Manually • At RefWorks Menu References Add New • Choose the desired output format in View fields used by (e.g. APA style) • Choose Ref Type (e.g. Web Page, Journal, Book, etc) • Type in the citation information and click “Save Reference” • Move the mouse cursor to the field names to view the meaning of the fields and required input format
Organize Records into Folders • The View option is located at the menu bar below the RefWorks Logo • View All References or Last Imported Folders; Select the records you want and use the Add To Folder option to store the selected records in the desired folder • Click the New Folder icon on the upper left screen to create your new Folder
Create a Folder (2) You can create a number of different folders to organize your references
Create a Folder (3) A folder name will be shown to notate which folder each reference is located in.
Create a Bibliography (1) • Click the Create Bibliography icon • Select desired style from the Output Style drop-down menu • Under the Format a Bibliography from a List of References, select desired format from the File Type drop-down menu • Click the radio button of Specify Folder (optional) and select the desired folder from the drop-down menu • Click Create Bibliography

Create a Bibliography (5) 4 Select Folder and Create Bibliography Select folder name in “References to include”. Then, click the Create Bibliography button.

Create a Bibliography (7) 6 View Bibliography NOTE: If the bibliography does not pop up in a new window, read the instructions. Look for the message box displayed on the bottom right hand corner and click the link called click here.
