What is Lyme Disease? Lyme Disease, also known as Lyme Borreliosis, is caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, a bacterium spread by black-legged ticks from animals such as mice and deer
Signs and Symptoms of Lyme Disease • Red, expanding rash called erythema migrans (EM) • Fatigue, fever, chills, headache, swollen lymph nodes • Facial or Bell’s palsy (loss of muscle tone in one or both side of the face) • Meningitis • Shooting pain • Pain and swelling in joints • (Worst stage) severe joint pain
Treatment for Lyme Disease • Usually, a series of antibiotics are required. Common antibiotics used are doxycycline, amoxicillin, and cefuroxime axetil
What’s the worst that can happen? • If gone untreated too long, the patient can develop severe joint pain and arthritis • If the disease spreads to the spinal cord or nerves, serious nervous system problems can result. They will take the form of pain and weakness in arms or legs • Rarely, months and even years later a patient can develop heart problems. However, all of these issues are somewhat treatable.
Facts about Lyme Disease: • 95% of all reported cases come from 16 states, the top ten of which are in the New England area. • Worldwide, cases are concentrated in upper North America, Europe, Russia and China.
