  2. Vocabulary vo-ca-bu-la-ry This first part of this unit has 12 words. Most of the words are broken up into syllables as we tend to say them. The underlined words are one syllable words. Learn each word’s definition and spelling. 

  3. af-fect Definition: When you affect something, you make a difference to it. When you affect something, you somehow cause it to change.

  4. sym-bol Definition: A symbol is something that stands for something else. On a map, when you see a tiny picture or icon, it tells you what you are looking at without using words. A map key, or map legend, will tell you what they represent.

  5. trail Definition: A trail is a path that people can follow. A trail is often a dirt walkway through trees and shrubs, sometimes in the woods.

  6. ce-le-brate Definition: When you celebrate you do things for a special event or day. Often when we celebrate we have a ceremony or a party or a dinner with close people.

  7. scale Definition: The scale on the map tells how far apart two places are. A scale is measurement on a map that helps you to understand how big or how small a place is. A scale is often part of the map key or legend.

  8. mar-ket Definition: A market is a place where people buy and sell things. At a market people can decide on a price together.

  9. farm-ing Definition: Farming is growing crops or raising animals. Farming is done out in country fields, outside of the city.

  10. fish-ing Definition: People go fishing to catch fish and other animals that live in the water. Fishing can be done from a boat, or from the dock at the shore. Some people fish as a hobby to relax. Other people fish as a way to earn money.

  11. po-pu-la-tion Definition: The population of a place is the number of people who live there. The population in the city is greater than the population in a farming community.

  12. con-ti-nent Definition: A continent is one of seven large main land masses in the world. The continents are: 1 Europe 2 Africa 3 Australia 4 Antarctica 5 Asia 6 North America 7 South America Use our sentence to help you remember! EAT AN APPLE AFTER A NASTY SANDWICH.

  13. com-pass rose Definition: A compass rose shows the basic directions: north, south, east, and west on a map. A compass rose also has four additional directions: northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest. (Intermediate directions)

  14. com-mon Definition: When something is common, it is seen often, or many times. It is common to see school buses in a town like White Plains because we have five elementary schools in a small area.
