  1. Test Taking Strategies For Success on the EOCT.

  2. Preparation • It is important to prepare for a test in advance. Nothing good comes from simply “winging” anything that you do. • Practice • Practice tests and review is the best way to prepare. • Studying over long periods is more effective than cramming the night before a test.

  3. Preparation • Get a good night’s sleep before the test. Pulling an all-nighter studying will only hurt your performance. • Eat a good breakfast the morning of the test. Avoid eating sugary foods. High-protein foods like scrambled eggs are often best for aiding concentration and minimizing fatigue. • Wear comfortable clothing.

  4. During the test • Don’t panic. • Take your time. • Use the restroom if you have to. A full bladder will only distract your concentration. • Don’t worry about other people being finished before you. Everyone tests differently. Just because someone’s finished first doesn’t mean that the test was easy for them.

  5. RATER Method • With an English test such as the EOCT, you will be presented with long passages to read. • Follow this strategy to aid your understanding of the test structure and to boost your achievement: • Read: • Read all directions and questions for the section. This will give you a clear understanding of what you are expected to do. • Annotate: • Mark any questions that you have no clue about with a minus (-) next to the number. Mark any questions with content you recognize with a plus (+) next to the number.

  6. RATER Method • Take: • Take your time reading passages. Always be mindful of the directions and the questions that correspond with the passage. • Eliminate: • Eliminate the easiest questions (+) by answering them. Eliminate outlandish answers from difficult questions (-). • React and Review: • React with your instincts if struggling. If you feel in your gut that an answer is right, it probably is. If time, Review
