The Alaskan Boundary Dispute • Took place between Canada and the U.S over Alaska • In 1867 U.S purchased Alaska from Russia • This didn’t make much impact until the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898 • The sixth lord of Alverstone who was the lord chief of justice in England, he supported the American claim for a boundary running behind Inuits • The Canadian judges refuse to sign the reward that was issued on October 20th1903 • Violent anti British feeling had erupted in Canada
The Alaskan Boundary Disputes • Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier was irriated at the decision • Laurier asserted that Canada lack of treaty making power made it difficult to maintain the rights internationally • Canadian anger was slowly disappearing • But suspicions of the U.S provoked by the award may have contributed to Canada's rejection of free trade in 1911 • They called this the Reciprocity Election • Alaska settlement gave better understanding between the U.S and Brittan that worked to Canada’s advantage WWI
