Odysseus and Greek Culture • In this chapter, Odysseus determination but also his lazy side become obvious. • Even though Odysseus has spent the past couple of years trying to reach home again, he wasted away a whole year with on the Island of Alaia. • But after the year wasted with Circe, Odysseus becomes focused again and begins his journey to Hades. • He becomes determined and while in Hades he procrastinates speaking with several people but finally he talks to Tiresais. • Again he becomes focused and sets sail after knowing how to get home.
Odysseus & Greek Culture cnt. • During The Odyssey, Odysseus is viewed as a hero who has become a victim of the gods. • I think the perceptions of the relationship between the mortals and gods are important to the Greek Culture. • Even as a great war hero and respected leader, Odysseus could not escape the wrath of Poseidon. • I think Greek Culture reflected that in this book, that even the most crafty men are not too smart for the Gods. • Also I think the Odyssey shows the belief that every action has a consequences. Odysseus
Hades & Greek Culture • Hades in Greek culture is perceived as a place for the dead to live out their punishment for acts they committed in life. • “ Tityos, son of Gaia, lying abandoned over nine square rods of plain. Vultures, hunched above him, left & right, rifling his belly, stabbed into the liver, and he could never push them off. • In this example Tityos was being punished for raping one of Zeus’s mistress. • As for being able to travel to Hades and actually converse with the dead, shows how the Greek culture sees to the past for answers. • The dead also are concerned for their relatives and those who live. • In Greek culture, there is life even after someone dies, it is just lived out in the underworld.
Greek Culture & Modern Society • In the adventure of Odysseus and Hades, he goes to the dead for answers. • This same situation can be placed with the Chinese culture and their reference to their ancestors for advice and guidance. • The Chinese culture believes it is a must to keep their ancestors happy/ • In Odyssues’s case, one of the dead was unhappy with him and never assisted him. • As how Odysseus looked to the past for guidance, the chinese culture looks to their ancestors. Ancient Greek Ruins.
