What is Life? • An Organism is a living thing. • All living things have: • Cellular organization • Contain certain chemicals • Respond to surroundings • Grow and develop • Reproduce
Characteristics of Life- Cells • Unicellular- single celled organisms • Multicellular- many cells and they specialize to perform certain task. • Cell is the basic unit of structure and function of an organism. • Prokaryotic- cells with no true nucleus. • Eukaryotic-cells with a nucleus
Characteristics of Life- Chemistry • Cells are composed of chemicals • Water is the most abundant • Carbohydrates are the main source of energy • Cells also need proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids
Characteristics of Life- Energy and Stimuli • Cells need energy for growth and repair of injured parts. • A change in an organism’s surroundings that causes a reaction is a stimulus. • Tropism- a response to a stimuli ( phototropism, thermal tropism, auditory tropism, gravitational tropism)
Characteristics of Life- Development/Reproduction • Development is the process of change that occurs during an organism’s life to produce a more complex organism. • Reproduction is the ability to reproduce(sexually or asexually), or produce offspring just like you.

Needs of Living Things • Water- needed to survive… to break down chemicals, food, grow, move, and reproduce. • Food- a source of energy • Autotroph vs Heterotrophs
Needs of Living Things • Living space-Need a place to live and gather needed resources to survive. • Stable internal conditions despite the external conditions. • Homeostasis
