Cliff Lambert – LE Studies Common mistakes in logic
Appealing to Authority • Who knows if MC Hammer really liked Pepsi, drank it or not but 80’s music fans did at the thought that he does.
Attacking the Person • Like the example says - the media's attention on his birth certificate was trivial and getting in the way of more important political issues.
Creating a StrawMan • They create a straw man out of both men to save the people’s hope. Two-Face remains the "White Knight" hero that they need, even though he wasn’t everything he was suppose to be. As well as Batman choosing false villainy so they have their "Bad Guy" to take the blame.
Appealing to the "People" • Bert and Ernie in no way put off a gay vibe but media made it so. Now innocent cartoon characters are not being shown in certain "markets" because of the use of faulty logic, in this case homophobia.
Creating a Red Herring cover up president sex scandal and win a re-election. • This whole movie is all about a "staged" war to
Basing Arguments on Emotion • Magneto is fueled by emotion and even Xavier has nothing to say when his final argument is an bitter statement about how he was once treated.
Appealing to Tradition • Highlights error in thinking that just because something is traditionally done even when it is outdated.
Fact vs. Opinion • This one talks about evolution (science based fact) and religion (opinion) and how many people mistakenly use their beliefs of religion as Fact.
Using a Faulty Analogy • As Bill Hicks points out the phrase "War on Drugs" is a very poor analogy though since it's such a commonly used slogan we don't actually think about what its really saying.
Pointing to a False Cause • He lists lots of examples of the false causes that people have created and points out just how flawed that thinking is.
