Matter: Properties of Matter Chapter 2 Section 2 Pp 45-52
All Matter has Properties • There are two kinds of properties in matter • Physical Properties • Chemical Properties
Physical Properties • Physical Properties identify a substance • They describe matter • You can use your senses to find physical properties • sometimes you need some equipment to help!
Some Physical Properties • Color • Size • Odor • Hardness • Shape • Temperature
Some Special Physical Properties • Boiling Point – the temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas • Melting Point – the temperature at which a solid becomes a liquid • Density – the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of a substance • D = m/V • Density is equal to the mass divided by the Volume • Units – g/cm3
Chemical Properties • Chemical properties describe how a substance reacts • Reacts with what? • How much/fast does it react?
Some Special Chemical Properties • Reactivity – the ability of a substance to combine chemically with another substance • Flammability – the ability of a substance to react in the presence of oxygen and burn when exposed to a flame
Flammability and Reactivity Reactivity Flammability
Flammability and Reactivity Reactivity – Sodium in Water Flammability
