Project Introduction • Re- design of bed located at Colorado State University’s Plant Environmental Research Center (PERC). • Incorporation of a variety of perennial trial plants desired.
Site Analysis • Located outside the Plant Environmental Research Center on W. Lake St. • Exposure: NW portion of bed will be mostly shaded. While the SE portion will be sunny. • Soil: Clay Loam 7.3 pH
Site Requirements • The Celtisoccidentalis(Hackberry)and Gelditsiatriacanthos(Honey Locust)must remain in the landscape. (Located in north-west region of bed.) • Pop up irrigation system already installed at site. • Use of plants that allow for year round landscape color and texture.
Objectives • Utilize perennials in a landscape that displays color and texture year round. • Theme: The Four Seasons • Removal of turf and existing plant material, removal of railroad ties for additional space, and application of mulch • Plant selections represent a diversity of plant size, color, texture, and bloom time.
Fall Perennials Hardy Chrysanthemum Garden Phlox Obedient Plant New York Aster
Fall Plant Selections • Incorporated many tall species for this season. • Provide variety of color throughout all of the Fall. • Many sun-loving species to take advantage of Colorado’s usual sunny Autumn.
Winter Perennials Purple Wintercreeper Plume Grass Plumbago Silver Mound Artemisia Chinese Silver Grass
Winter Plant Selections • Use of ground cover to provide evergreen color during the winter months. • Ornamental grasses used to provide background texture. • Use of plants that require sun exposure to draw attention away from barren trees and shrubs on Northwest corner.
Spring Perennials Dicentra spectabilis - Bleeding Heart Pachysandra terminalis - Japanese Pachysandra Primula x polyantha - Polyanthus Primrose Pulmonaria species -Lungwort Viola odorata - Violet
Spring Plant Selections • Spring plant choices represent a variety of early blooming ground cover, as well as taller more showy species. • Most of the Spring plant choices are shade loving plants, which will be well suited for the shady area of the bed near the trees that remain. • Plants selected will offer an aesthetic display throughout the Spring season (March-May).
Summer Perennials Hosta Holly Hock Foxglove Shasta Daisy Sweet Woodrough
Summer Plant Selections • Used both shade and sun loving species to create a wide array of color during the summer months. • Incorporated species that offered either robust color or sweet fragrance to the display. • Use of varying heights to create a balanced contrast between plant sizes.
Overall Design = Fall = Winter = Spring = Summer
Conclusion • Provide the CSU PERC facilities with a re-designed and attractive entrance . • Create a perennial display that incorporates a variety of plants that provide a year -round aesthetic experience.
