Welcome to Math 3! Fall 2010
Unit 1 – Algebra: Linear Systems, Matrices, & Vertex-Edge Graphs • 1.1 – Use Problem Solving Strategies and Models • Georgia Performance Standard: • MM3P1d – Monitor and reflect on the process of mathematical problem solving • MM3P3a – organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication
What’s the deal with Word Problems? • Figure out which formula applies • Write the formula • Plug in what we know • One variable should remain *SOLVE*
Ex: • A rectangular fence has an area of 2400 square feet. If the length of the fence is 80 feet, what is the width of the fence?
Ex. • A boat travels at a speed of 32 miles per hour. How long will it take the boat to travel 144 miles?
Formulas • Area of a rectangle= length * width • Perimeter of a rectangle = 2L + 2W • Distance = Rate * Time • Area of Parallelogram = Base * Height • Do problems: • Page 4 : 1 – 8, 14-16
Find the Rule for the FUNction • Figure out what the X’s go by • +2….+2….+2….etc. • Figure out what the Y’s go by • +4….+4…..+4….etc. • y/x = slope • 4/2 = 2 • What is slope intercept form? • Y = mx + b • Test IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Problems • Page 4: 11 – 13
Tomorrow…… • UNIT 1.2 !!!!
