  3. Service Discovery Scenario • Scenario • STA can discover the service before association • Example: • User can use 802.11aq to find the WLAN network that provide printing service in hotel. • Assumption: • Service discovery is performed before association. Dapeng Liu (CMCC)

Proposed Architecture • STA to AP: Pre-association service discovery layer 2 protocol • Extend ANQP or • Define new Service Discovery Protocol • AP to Service Server: • Up layer service discovery protocol • May not in 802.11 scope • For service that provided by STA case is one exception. Extension for Service Discovery • Beacon • Extend beacon to indicate support of service discovery • Example: • In beacon message, define service discovery element. • Service Type: define the service type that the WLAN network can provide. • Example: • Printer/VoIP… Element ID Service Type Octet 2 1 Dapeng Liu (CMCC)

Extension for Service Discovery • Service discovery protocol • Define new Service discovery protocol over GAS • Similar with ANQP, query/response protocol • STA can use this protocol to query service before association. • Example: • STA ask: what is the IP address of the printer in this WLAN network? • AP translate this query to up-layer protocol and query the WLAN network. (for example, Bonjour) • The AP get response from the service provider (e.g. printer). • The AP send the query response to the STA, including the printer type and other parameters of the printer. • The AP can cache and set the service type field in the beacon message.
