Workshop Objectives • Introduce RU Libraries and their locations. • Demonstrate important features of RU Libraries website. • Introduce tools that will help you efficiently and effectively locate and retrieve physical and/or digital library resources. 2
Say NO to Information Overload! • We are providing you with a lot of information today. • Don’t be overwhelmed!! J • Remember, you can access this presentation at any time from our website. • Librarians LOVE to help! Don’t be afraid to ask fellow students for info. 3
Library Help: Searchpath • STOP informationoverload! • Click the pic to gothere now! • Access Searchpathremotely (at yourleisure) for a veryhelpful tutorial. 4
Do You Speak “Library”? • Welcome to the wonderful world of library science! • We don’t have a secret handshake, but we do have our own “language”. 5
Library Lingo • OPAC = Online Public Access Catalog • RUL = Rutgers University Libraries • For more library lingo, click here. • Then, test your knowledge with some Library Science Jeopardy! 6
Where is the Closest Library? • Archibald S. Alexander Library (affectionately known as “Alex”) • It’s right next door! (between the SC&I Building and the College Ave. Parking Deck) • Alex was built in 1956 and is the oldest and largest of the RU Libraries. • A café, The Scarlet Latte, was added in 2011. • Watch LISSA listserv for tour info (and be sure to sign up)! 7
Click here to read a description of the Alexander Library collection. 8
What about Other RU Libraries? • As a Rutgers student, you are eligible to use other campus libraries. • Some classes may require visits to other campus libraries. • You may live near another campus and find it convenient to use that library. 10
VALE NJ • Rutgers is a member of VALE (Virtual Academic Library Environment) NJ, which means that you may be eligible to borrow materials from another college campus near you. • For more information, including a list of participating institutions, click here. 11
Why can’t I just Google it? • The Rutgers Library Catalog connects you with resources available at Rutgers or through ILL (Inter-Library Lending) consortia • Library website provides access to online indexes and databases not available via Google • Materials for some classes may be on Electronic Reserve 13
Get your Library Card! • Your library card = your RU student ID card • Before you borrow materials, you will need to register the barcode number on the back of your ID card. PIN numbers are no longer issued. • Let’s do that now! (You can also stop by the Alex circulation desk during operating hours). 15
The URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for the RU Libraries Website is http://www.libraries.rutgers.edu. The website provides information about all the libraries affiliated with the University. Type the URL into your browser or click the picture above. 12
These RU libraries have their own catalogs. Limit search by Library. Change search criteria. Input search term(s). 16
Library Catalog Search Practice • Title search: Seeking Meaning • Author search: Kay Cassell • Subject search: student’s choice! • Advanced search (let’s take a look) 17
Library Catalog: Tips and Tricks • Repeat title search: Seeking Meaning • Mark record and e-mail to yourself (or to a group partner) • Use subject heading hyperlinks to find more information on topics of interest • Compare Book Delivery/Recall function with Book Special Request function 18
Library Catalog : Circulating Materials • Graduate students can borrow circulating materials for the whole semester! For full details, click here. • Remember the Book Delivery/Recall? • Recall notices will be sent to your RU student directory e-mail listing (make sure you are checking that e-mail!!) • You will have 14 days to return a recalled book. 19
Fines for Overdue Recall Items • The fine for a recalled item that is not returned within 14 days is $5.00/day up to $50.00. • Failure to return a recalled item on time will result in suspension of your borrowing privileges. • Click here for more information about library fines. 20
Research Resources • Let’s explore the subject guides… 21
You try: Library Catalog Search • Periodical search: Library Journal • Use the “Advanced Search” and the “match on” … exact content… • You can find journals by title in the Library Catalog, but you cannot search for articles by title 22
How Do I Find an Article? • Start with Indexes and Databases; choose a periodical index that covers your subject of interest. • Get help from the library! • Don’t forget, you can always Ask a Librarian. • Also, check out the FAQs and the How Do I's on the library website. 25
Databases differ! • Not all databases provide access to full text of articles. • Find American Libraries in “Library Literature and Information Science.” Select any article and see what is available. • Find American Libraries in “Academic Search Premier.” Select the same article and compare with LLIS results. • Review How Do I Get My Article? 26
Searchlight Searchlight can help you get started! Let’s look for an article with the word “Googlizers” in the title. 27
Remember… • Searchlight only searches the databases listed (see previous slide). • To search other databases, use the links in Indexes and Databases (select by subject or alphabetically). • You can mark and e-mail search results to yourself so you don’t have to recreate searches. 28
RefWorks RefWorks is great! Let’s explore … Click here to get to the RefWorks tutorial. 29
RU Libraries Toolbar • Check out this cutting edge RU tool! Click the pic to explore… 30
My Account • You will need to register your barcode and get your library PIN before you can access “My Account”. 31
Restricted Access • Certain Electronic Resources have licenses that restrict access to current students, faculty, and staff: • On site (LOCAL) • Off site (REMOTE) • Access is usually limited to a certain number of users at one time. If you have trouble getting into a database, try again at a later time. 32
Local / Remote • Campus computers are local. • If you connect your laptop on campus using the RU wireless network, your computer will be local. • If you access the library website from your home computer or other off-campus location, you will be connecting remotely. 34
Remote Connection Tips • Connection times out after extended inactivity; just re-enter your NetID and password. • Occasionally gets “confused” if results are opened in too many new windows; try to open in one window. • See “How Do I Connect from Off-Campus?” 38
Graduate Reading Room • On the 3rd floor of Alex. • You’ll need your ID to get in. • PCs and Networked Printers available. 40
If you still can’t find it… • Search the library Website • Check the library Site Index • The library and its friendly librarians want to help you! Please don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. (Hint: They love helping library students). 41
Electronic Reserves • Some professors will put items on electronic reserve. You can view these on campus computers or via your remote connection. • Click the pic to see how it’s done. 42
Last Chance… 43
