Examples: • Telling: My brother is talented • Showing: My brother modifies sports car engines, competes in ballroom dance tournament and analyzes chess algorithms. • Telling: The house is creepy. • Showing: The shingles are askew and the windows smashed, with pointed shards still clinging to some panes.
Why we should show rather than tell? • The little girl looked so tired, she clearly needed a nap.
How can we show rather than tell? • Avoid “telling” it to your reader • Give clues that show the setting, story and the character • Put the mental “camera” in the scene and have it run then describe what it “records” • Let your reader infer that meaning and experience it first hand. • Assume that your reader is smart enough to play detective – you prove the details and the reader interprets them.
