What is rap music? • Rap is meant to get your attention and test the boundaries of society. • It often portrays the need and want for money, then glorifies the lifestyle of the wealthy. • It reinforces the stereotypes of women by playing on sexuality and dominance while maintaining a tough outer exterior that suggest the gansta persona.

  3. Notice the skimpy lingerie and the positioning on the bearskin rug…..stance is clearly sexual, and is meant to invoke thoughts of that nature. Conclusion: Scantily clad Lil’ Kim straddling a bearskin rug while champagne chills in a silver bucket forms a narrative tat relies upon male sexual prowess and devalued feminine sensuality. Soft lighting and vases of roses act as signifiers for romance and sexual desire.

  4. The Pimp Myth: those who have money and carry themselves in such a way are seen as “pimp”. Green background signifies money, as do the large rings on Master P’s fingers…. Notice the camera angle…..this establishes a hierarchical relationship between the viewer and the rapper. Each of these elements work by combining signifiers of occupation and apparel to establish and reinforce this stereotype.

  5. Naughty by Nature’s apparel and stance are meant to invoke the stereotype of the urban black gangsta. The chainsaw held by the man in the center works to establish this gangsta motif by evoking an ideology of destruction. Notice the graffitied cinderblock walls, fallen ceilings, and all other elements reinforce the tough persona of these men as well as the stereotype of the gangsta image.
