  2. Asha-16 Conference Purpose • To remove financial burden and support individuals who are committed and who will work in a sustained manner for social impact initiatives

Asha-16 Conference 1999 – Initial Discussion • “To create a coherent Asha Fellowship Scheme proposal and to continue work on it to bring the scheme to fruition” • Dialectic between critic and protagonist • Aim - 1). search, attract and financially support people of the highest quality and unquestionable dedication 2). support only those whose work in time will have a large positive impact by creating an insitution or a methodology 3). be enabling. it should help the individual to break away and work freely on that for which she receives the grant which she couldn't have done otherwise.

Asha-16 Conference 1999 – Initial Discussion • Area of support include, but are not limited to: Education, Income Generation, Women's Empowerment, Integrated Rural or Slum Development, Addressing Dominant Social Concerns like Child Labor, Bonded Labor • fellowship will not be awarded for organisations, dissertations and other academic work including post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate research

  7. Asha-16 Conference 2000 - First fellows funded • 7 individuals were supported in Spring 2000. Sandeep, Shanmuga, Arundhati, Chandrabhushan Tiwari, Biju Borbaruah, Ajit Kumar and Anil Sharma. The total monthly support of $800 ($50 to $200/month) was provided by nine Asha volunteers independent of Asha funds or Asha’s tax-ID. Support was provided to Sanjay Rai also. • 3 focus area's – Education only, Education+, Anything • 65% funds allocated for first two focus areas • At least 80% of work-time (ie., 32 hours per week) performing the work outlined in the application - and will not be compensated for that work or receive support from any other group for that time commitment.

Asha-16 Conference 2003 Asha South Fellows Meet • Dr. Subbaramaiah, Hameed Manjeshwar, Siddamma • Need to interact amongst fellows, share with asha • Update at Asha India conference: • 17 applications so far, about half have been supported through Asha, some others (2-3) supported through individuals. • Some discussion around amount of support given by other organizations (AID, NBA, Ashoka)

Asha-16 Conference 2005 : Asha-14Two kinds of fellowships There were increasingly official or unofficial fellows suggesting three kinds of categories 1) Individuals who have proposed new, innovative ideas and have worked to implement these in geographical areas where these have never reached. 2) Individuals who are a part of Asha and have worked on various activities of Asha or have taken up various responsibilities within Asha. These include project management. 3) Individual who work on vital administrative and logistical tasks like accounting, site visits, project evaluations, etc within Asha that are necessary to keep records and details of funding updated.

Asha-16 Conference 2005 : Asha-14Two kinds of fellowships • Not to confuse with worth/value of work done – but that they are different. • Asha-Fellows (for category 1 and 2) and Asha-Corps (for category 3) • Discussions in Asha-Fellows group concludes with fellowship process document proposed to ARC (Asha Representative Council) as strategic decision requiring discussion at each chapter.

Asha-16 Conference • Architects focusing on working with tribal children • Thulir ("a tender shoot) at Sittilingi Valley, Dharmapuri, TN http://thulir.org/ • After school program for 30-35 children • 3 areas of work – being a child, 10th pass!, technology training. • Part of the larger people’s initiative (Tribal Health Initiative – Hospital, organic farming, etc.

  20. Asha-16 Conference 1 year Technology Course One year course for children who have dropped out of mainstream school. Training in buliding, electrification, plumbing, etc. Visitors train children in the areas of their expertise.

Asha-16 Conference 2007 : Asha-16Chapter Criteria • (a) chapter has been in existence for >3 years or has a set of core volunteers who have volunteered with Asha for at least 3 years, • (b) it identifies a steward for the review/fellow • (c) has sufficient funds for 2-4 years. Two or more chapters can decide to review and support a fellowship jointly. • Chapter(s) reviewing a fellowship program for the first time (this includes cases where there has been a complete volunteer turnover in the chapter since the last time a fellowship was considered) should necessarily review fellowships jointly with a chapter with a current fellowship program and/or the AFFG. • Prior to approval, it is necessary that any person other than the nominator meet with the fellow.
