FAST FORWARD …….. • Isolated Hi-Tech Pockets in ISRO, DAE, DRDO, NIC…. • Enterprise of TCS, WIPRO, INFOSYS …. Many others begin in 1980’s… their struggles… C-DOT, C-DAC, ERNET, INSAT etc • Post - 1991 • IT CRAZE - Transformed Indian mind set towards economy and growth • Telecom liberalisation - boom - mobile in worker’s hand.
TECHNOLOGICAL SCENARIO • Technological break throughs to continue worldwide - in hardware & software • ICT “invasions” to all aspects of life - private, public, trade, governance, security, arts etc - to continue. “Embededed - into - life “. • India to master many of them - our entrepreneurs will do so.
SPECIAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES • INDIAN IT INDUSTRY IS PREDOMINANTLY EXPORT DEPENDANT AND IMPORT INTENSIVE • UNLESS BULK OF INDIA IS DRAWN INTO RELEVANT RPT RELEVANT IT APPLICATIONS THERE COULD BE CRISIS OF MARKET ITES TO FIND MANY ROOTS IN INDIA • HARDWARE MANUFACTURE AND ORIGINAL SOFTWARE PRODUCTS - NEEDED TO CREATE BUSINESS STRENGTHS
SPECIAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHALLENGES….(contd.) • Knowledge society cannot be confined to 5% of India or even 10%. One - child - one - computer UTOPIA causes cynicism when 90% don’t get any where near reasonable education • Innovative solutions for all segments of India. • Let us understand Indian Reality.

I am all for new developments in S&T and further R&D, new products continue and excel and win globally. • But Indian realities require multiple relevant solutions at affordable costs. (Not as cliches but as genuine value adder, income enhancer for all our people - THIS IS THE CHALLENGE WRITTEN IN ALL WALLS AND ALL INDIAN FACES!
