  2. National Expectations of Learners Have Grown For example, we have adopted the Common Core Standards which curriculum and assessment is aligned to meet.

  3. National Expectations of Teacher Have Grown Teacher evaluations are going to be tied to student progress Teacher evaluations are much more specific and extensive

Darien has responded to these changes by: Aligning our curriculum to meet the standards Supporting teachers with mathematics, technology and literacy coordinators Supporting teachers in the implementation of this curriculum with on the ground professional development and opportunities to work in professional learning communities as they implement the curriculum

  5. K-5 Writing Curriculum The writing curriculum includes 3 types of writing -narrative (story) -informational -persuasive Students learn these types of writing through the writing process in studies of different kinds of authentic writing (persuasive letters, literary essays, historical fiction)

  7. Writing Focuses on 3 Categories Structure Development Language Conventions

  8. Reading Instruction in Darien Students read just right texts Students learn skills and strategies in reading Students apply reading skills and strategies to a variety of different genres and text structures

  9. How Can I Support this at Home? Model the learner that you want your child to be Remember, “The one doing the work is the one doing the learning.” Find fun ways for your child to get repeated practice in reading and writing
