The Bandwidth Dilemma • If you create bandwidth, they’ll use it • “They” are probably not using it for what you built it for • So it may not function well • So what they do may confound what you were trying to do • “They” may be using it for something that shouldn’t be done (illegal, immoral, wasteful) • “They” may be using it for what’s next
The Bandwidth Progression • Remote machine control • FTP • Email • Chat • Text Web (gopher) • Graphic Web • VoIP • Video • Social Networking • Mesh-style file networks • “Cloud 2”
Who ‘yagonna manage? • People • Quotas • Services • Ports • Shaping
College Bandwidth Control Control Possible Response Use another student’s ID Less effective as more get “wired” Finer-grained control – only dorm students get dorm access College-oriented services tend to morph quickly Will those charges stick? • Identify by Mac address (registered per person) • Shape per service • Charge for outgoing packets
Corporate Bandwidth Control • Quotas probably don’t work • If you bill, provide a way for people to check • Less trouble with fast-morphing services • Bandwidth shaping does work • If bandwidth drives revenue, that provides a resource for covering the cost
Structure • More bandwidth • Economy of Scale • More destinations • Dedicated links on critical paths • More levels • Master Distribution Frame (MDF) / server room per site • Building/floor/department Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDF)
WAN • Non-Internet dedicated links between your sites? • Redundant links to Internet providers? • Guest and DMZ portions? • Perimeter security is a tool, not a solution. • Know why you are separating: security or performance
MDF • Part of your server room • Consistent scheme • Room to grow as needed • Secure
The IDF • Dedicated spaces for IDFs • Not a janitor closet • Don’t forget HVAC • Wiring channels to workstations • Rewiring should be rare but possible • Assume everything is part of a plenum • Remember to fire-seal up any holes made
