Tips on Working in Teams FINS1613 Team Problems
What role are you playing? It’s good to know your dominant role. It’s also good to know how to switch roles. Dominant leaders • Watch out that you don’t hog the discussion space. • Encourage followers to participate. • You can’t be a leader unless you have followers. • A leader spends more time listening and communicating the big picture! • Remember this is a team problem solving exercise! Dominant followers • Watch out that you don’t get left behind. • Ask when you don’t know what’s going on or don’t understand what your team members are saying. • Followers can become leaders by listening and summarizing to get clearer understanding by the whole team. • Leaders can and should become followers too. How to discuss problems in teams • Read the problem individually/ quietly: UNDERSTAND PROBLEM YOURSELF • What do you understand of the problem • How would you break down the problem – identify levels of complexity • Draw a diagram • Then discuss what you have found: UNDERSTAND PROBLEM AS A TEAM • Take turns at who starts speaking first. Identify the levels of complexity. • The others should listen first and only speak when the speaker has finished. • Allow everyone to speak and respond. • Then discuss the solution strategy: SOLVE PROBLEM IN PARTS/ EACH ONE PART • Agree on a diagram of cash flows, time, number of periods, etc. • Start on a solution … you will not have time to solve it in the tutorial. • Finish solving it at home • A partial solution will then be posted in Moodle.
