Fusion Energy Division (FED) Mission • This division promotes the development and timely introduction of fusion energy as a sustainable energy source with favorable economic, environmental, and safety attributes. The division cooperates with other organizations on common issues of multidisciplinary fusion science and technology, conducts professional meetings, and disseminates technical information in support of these goals. Members focus on the assessment and resolution of critical developmental issues for practical fusion energy applications.

FED Governance • Executive Committee: • At least 6 members (usually and currently 13); 3-yr terms • Chair (1 yr), Vice Chair (1 yr), Sec/Treas (2 yr) • Standing Committees: Nominating, Honors & Awards, and Program • Newsletter and Web: Editors are on rolling appointments • Liaisons: • Board: Gary Gates • MS&T: Ken Schultz • RS&P: Ham Hunter • IEEE: George Miley

FED Governance: Planning and Communication • Planning: • Strategic Plan was updated in 2003 • Succession Plan was updated in 2003 • Newsletter: • Newsletter sent twice a year by email • All back issues on ANS web site • Email list is broader than FED membership (>1000 names) • Web site is http://fed.ans.org; regularly updated

FED Contributions to ANS • ANS Position Statement on Fusion Energy (updated in 2003) • Participation with Other Professional Societies: • IEEE liaison (possible future meetings) • Other: Fusion Energy Sciences Advisory Committee • Society Leadership: • FED members are active nationally (McCarthy, Wilson, Schultz) • Non-Meeting Publications appear in Fusion Science and Technology

FED Meetings • National Meeting Participation: • Averaging 2 sessions per year • Recently, have had embedded topicals every 4 years • Topical Meetings: • Technology of Fusion Energy: • Nov. 2002 embedded in Washington, DC • Sep. 2004 stand alone in Madison(200 papers, ~1/3 foreign, ~1/6 students) • Nov. 2006 embedded in Albuquerque (Olson and Rochau hosting) • Fall 2008 stand alone? • Co-sponsor for Embedded Topical on Nuclear Fuelsand Structural Materials Topical (this week) • Sponsor Class IV Status: IFSA, ICENES, and Tritium

Summary • Areas of Success: • Membership has grown significantly over past several years (perhaps due to US rejoining ITER and progress on NIF) • Student membership up sharply since 2002 • TOFE attendance very strong in 2004; Expect strong showing in 2006 with ITER moving forward • Focus for Future Action: • Continue with Program Committee restart • Continue efforts to gain Fellow status for more FED members
