  7. Vision for Technology in Education Where are we going? Why are we doing this? Is this really a good investment?

Goals for TECH 21 •To learn how to understand students and their style of learning in the 21st Century and implement new teaching strategies that will enhance and support learning. •To build capacity and support student learning in the area of educational technology. •To build learning communities that will provide support to all learners – i.e. students, teachers, administrators. •To advance technology skills to Target Tech level in the Star Chart. •To meet the objectives included in the DEIC and BISD Technology Plan 2009-2012.

What we know: • 16% of students graduate from The University of Texas at Brownsville within 6 years or less compared to 77% from Texas A&M or UT Austin • U.S. students must compete in a new global economy. • The nature of work is changing. • The requirements of the 21st Century work force are changing. • We need to prepare our students to be effective 21st Century citizens.

Findings Technology-based learning experiences that students are having outside of school – not directed by a teacher or part of a class assignment or homework: • seeking out other students for collaborations • information sharing and tutoring via Facebook • taking online assessments and tests to evaluate their own status in the knowledge acquisition process on a particular topic

Findings continued • using cell phone applications for self-organization and increased productivity • taking online classes not for a grade but to learn more about subject that interests them • accessing podcasts and videos to help in classes they are struggling in • finding experts (including other students) to connect with online to exchange new ideas and explore content in a myriad of new ways

  18. Read the description of the ISTE Standard on Digital Citizenship in the next slide, visit the Cyber Safety Links, and discuss with your neighbor what defines a cyber-citizen, what are the responsibilities and skills necessary to exhibit “Digital Citizenship”.

  21. If students have access to technology, why are they still struggling? Students are lacking skills that are needed to be successful in a professional environment - they are very familiar with the tools when it comes to entertainment, however when skills are transferred to the real world and to a professional environment, they are not able to use all of the tools.

BISD Technology Plan: • Goal 1: Provide all students with instruction in the use of technology that empowers them to become more knowledgeable of their world and develop their academic skills. • Goal 2: Provide the knowledge skills and resources necessary for all educators to fully integrate technology into the curriculum. • Goal 3: Develop a partnership with parents and the Community to assist in developing all students to their potential.

BISD Tech Plan (cont’d) • Goal 4: To provide the knowledge and skills necessary to fully integrate technology into administrative functions and to allow all administrators to make informed decisions on technology acquisitions and usage. • Goal 5: To provide a high-speed, quality infrastructure and high value hardware for all schools and district offices.

BISD - District Educational Improvement Council Technology(DEIC) Goal • Our vision for technology is to have all district stakeholders involved in the teaching and learning process seamlessly integrate technology to make informed decisions and advance student achievement and technology literacy to encourage and support creative, innovative, lifelong learning.

  25. What technology is not technology integration: * Kids sent to the lab to complete a five-paragraph essay. * Cutting and pasting information found at a website to complete a school project or essay.* Using interactive whiteboards as projection screens.

  27. Essential questions to consider: * Are you giving people access to information they’ve never had before? * Are you giving people access to people? * Are there new relationships? e.g. teachers working together, connectivity to family – home, kids working with kids around the world

  40. Readingand writing will be different in 10 years. Language has always evolved to embrace new realities and it is evolving now. There will be a new fluidity in media creation.
