2. Summer Research Goals • participate in the process of scientific investigation; • gain first-hand knowledge and experience with the methodology required for the project; • student should collect, analyze and interpret the project data under the guidance of their faculty mentor; • present findings at local/national meetings Design, Collect, Organize, Describe, Analyze, Share: D-CODAS

4. Summer Research- Application • Identify a mentor and agree on a project • Your original idea • Component of mentor’s research • Complete an application; see website for application details & format (2018); Due April 1 • Address all of the questions on the application – the more detail the better • The applications will be reviewed by members of the Research Committee. • You may be asked for details/clarification

5. Process • DUE April 1; notified mid April • Email submission; mentor must be copied on the email. • Submit IRB documents as needed (human subjects approval)– start ASAP: You will not be approved for the project unless these requirements are met. • 2-3 student research meetings during June – dates TBD

Summer Research Program Human Subjects Research • Submit IRB documents as needed (human subjects approval)– start ASAP • Any project that requires IRB review will require you to complete the CITI (human subjects protection) certificate. Online course – free. • See dental school website; Research; Research Support; Credentialing & Certification • Before final approval, you will need to provide • Evidence of CITI course completion • IRB application submitted • If project is already approved, you need to be added on the IRB if using identifiable information.

7. Summer Stipend Summer Stipend $2400 Paid in 2 installments; July 31 and August 31. 2nd payment after progress reports and mentor signs off . Progress benchmarks: Before 1st payment: Lit review and background, expanded from the application; IRB if required; Develop a data collection tool; a draft data entry database; MUST submit for review

8. Your Responsibilities During the Summer • Complete the project activities; honor your time commitment. This is a full-time commitment – you are not to be engaged in other volunteer/employment during the daytime hours. • Attend the 2-3 summer research meetings; check in every couple of weeks. Get help with specific topics such as survey construction, data collection forms, etc. • Required to submit an interim (June,30) and final (July 30) progress report, documenting benchmarks.

9. Your Responsibilities • Let me know if you are having issues; delays of any kind; need to unexpectedly leave during the summer; • I will help, if I know. Otherwise, you risk not receiving the stipend.

10. Mentorship • No more than 2 students per mentor; ASK your mentor, check with me • Mentors will evaluate and sign off on your progress; if not satisfactory, 2nd payment may be withheld • A good student mentee: • identifies his/her needs and presents them to his/her mentor. • is open-minded and ready to try the mentor’s advice. • makes explicit requests for help. • is honest and able to bring up any issue • respects and appreciates the mentor’s effort

11. Presentations • Submit abstract for national meeting • You are expected to give an ORAL presentation at Professional’s Day; • You may also contribute a poster presentation

12. Travel Travel; support may be competitive $800-1,000 to DEFRAY expenses; we do not guarantee that all your travel expenses will be covered with this amount. To receive travel funds: abstract accepted submit a detailed write-up about the project with Results and Discussion Research Committee will select sponsored travel.

13. FAQs 1.Off campus project? Typically, no; need a mentor at the off-campus site; need a letter of support & understanding from off-site mentor; also a local mentor; thoroughly described project. Partial stipend 2. When conducted? 8 weeks between May 1 and July 30; some flexibility; you are expected to fulfill commitment to a full-time 8 week project. Mentors will need to sign off on your time.

14. FAQs 3. Shorter time period? No 4. Shared projects? Maybe, BUT the projects must be clearly delineated. 2 separate abstracts must be possible, which address distinct questions. These will be stringently reviewed and may not be accepted. 5. Is everyone funded? 7-8 funded projects this year. Create a strong application. Answer the questions on the application thoroughly.

15. FAQs 6. Help from others – collaborations with residents? No. You are not collecting data for residents projects; not collecting chart review data for residents. See me if you have questions.
