What are HIT Systems? • Health Information Technology (HIT) • Wide Variety of Systems Available for Use • Application of information processing involving both computer hardware and software • Storage, retrieval, sharing, and use of health care information, data, and knowledge for communication and decision making. • Sample Systems: • Personal Health Records - Microsoft Healthvault • Electronic Medical Records – OpenEMR • Patient Portals • E Prescribing (electronic Rx)
What are Key Definitions? • Electronic Health Record (EHR) • An electronic record of health-related information on an individual • Conforms to nationally recognized interoperability standards and that can be created, managed, • Consulted by authorized clinicians and staff across more than one health care organization. • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) • Synonymous with EHR • Personal Health Record (PHR) • 1st Two Bullets of EHR Apply Plus … • Drawn from multiple sources while being managed, shared • Controlled by the individual (patient)
What are Key Definitions? • Practice Management System (PMS) • A portion of the medical office record or a software application • Contains financial, demographic and non-medical information about patients. • Patient Portal • A Web site that offers a range of resources, making Appointments, Requesting Refills, etc. • e-Prescribing • Electronic prescribing (doctor or other health care provider who is legally allowed to write prescriptions) • Send your prescriptions electronically and directly to your pharmacy.
