ELON MUSK The Man who aims for the stars
Birth & Upbringing • Elon Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. He obtained his Canadian citizenship in 1989, in part because he felt it would be easier to obtain American citizenship via that path. In 2002, he achieved his goal of becoming a U.S. citizen. • He was a son of a Canadian mother and a South African father, Elon Musk spent his early childhood with his brother Kimbal and sister Tosca in South Africa. At 10, around the time his parents divorced, so the introverted Elon developed an interest in computers.
Timeline of companies and major events • He founded X.comin 1999 (which later became PayPal), SpaceX in 2002 and Tesla Motors in 2003. Musk became a multimillionaire in his late 20s when he sold his start-up company, Zip2, to a division of Compaq Computers. • He bolstered his portfolio with the purchase of SolarCity in 2016, and cemented his standing as a leader of industry by taking on an advisory role in the early days of President Donald Trump's administration. • Musk has also been working on side projects such as Hyperloop, AI, Boring company and the high speed train.
Zip2 was a company that provided and licensed online city guide software to newspapers. The company was founded in Palo Alto, California as Global Link Information Network in 1995, by brothers Elon and Kimbal Musk and Greg Kouri. • Initially, Global Link provided local businesses with an Internet presence, but later began to assist newspapers in designing online city guides before being purchased by Compaq Computer in 1999. • Musk used the money gained from Zip2 and started his new company X.com (later known as PayPal).
X.Com (PayPal) • In 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online financial services/payments company. • An X.com acquisition the following year led to the creation of PayPal as it is known today, and in October 2002, PayPal was acquired by eBay for $1.5 billion in stock. Before the sale, Musk owned 11 percent of PayPal stock. • PayPal acts as an in-between between and the people you are buying from. It's primary use is theoretically ensuring that your credit card information is secure. PayPal is a middle man.
SpaceX • Musk founded his third company, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, or SpaceX, in 2002 with the intention of building spacecraft for commercial space travel. • On May 22, 2012, Musk and SpaceX made history when the company launched its Falcon 9 rocket into space with an unmanned capsule. • In March 2017, SpaceX saw the successful test flight and landing of a Falcon 9 rocket made from reusable parts, a development that opened the door for more affordable space travel. • The company enjoyed another milestone moment in February 2018 with the successful test launch of the powerful Falcon Heavy rocket
tesla • Musk is the co-founder, CEO and product architect at Tesla Motors, a company dedicated to producing affordable, mass-market electric cars. • In April 2017, Tesla announced that it surpassed General Motors to become the most valuable U.S. car maker. • Tesla's (TSLA)market value has climbed to almost $48 billion surpassing Ford and nearly the same as GM. • Musk’s vision of electric cars taking over the automobile industry is nearly coming true as Tesla’s affordable model 3 has now given customers an electric car (with lifetime free charging) with a price contrasting with other gasoline sedans.
Solarcity • In August 2016, in Musk’s continuing effort to promote and advance sustainable energy and products for a wider consumer base, a $2.6 billion dollar deal was solidified to combine his electric car and solar energy companies. His Tesla Motors Inc. announced an all-stock deal purchase of Solar City Corp., a company Musk had helped his cousins start in 2006. He is a majority shareholder in each entity. • Solar City is America's #1 full-service solar provider. • They make clean energy available to homeowners, businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations at a lower cost than they pay for energy generated by burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas.
Other Inventions & Innovations • In August 2013, Elon Musk released a concept for a new form of transportation called the "Hyperloop," an invention that would foster commuting between major cities while severely cutting travel time. • Elon Musk has pursued an interest in Artificial Intelligence, becoming co-chair of the non-profit Open “AI”. The research company launched in late 2015 with the stated mission of advancing digital intelligence to benefit humanity. • In January 2017 Elon Musk launched yet an other innovation “The Boring Company” ,suddenly deciding he was going find a way to reduce traffic by devoting resources to boring and building tunnels.
Challenges faced by musk during his road to success • From a very young age musk was bullied at school. • The Board of Directors, looking at the long run, removed Musk as the CEO of his own companycalled Zip2. • He was then ousted as CEO from his next company (PayPal) after a disagreement. • while on a vacation to his native country South Africa, he experienced a near-death experience. Then he saw his son die who was 10 weeks old. • At SpaceX he was on the verge of bankruptcy and had money for only one launch. • The launch of Tesla was delayed and the company also faced severe financial issues, coming very close to shutting down. • After pumping all his money into Tesla and SpaceX, Musk was running dry. Musk was living on personal loans from friends since October 2009.
Lessons to be Learned from Elon Musk • 1. “Focus on the impact of your dreams, not the odds”. Elon Musk has taught me that dreams do come true if you work hard and don’t let the failures come in the way of your success as ‘the days that break you are the ones that make you who you are’. • 2. No one does amazing things for the money.: He has also taught me that world changing thingsare not done for the money, they are done to change the world. • 3. Constantly question yourself He has also taught me that by questioning yourself, you make better decisions as when Elon saw how expensive the used Russian rockets were, he then questioned himself whether he needed to buy rockets whenhe could make them himself.
The company that you like I personally like SpaceX as Elon’s vision to make cheap yet effective rockets and the dream to settle on Mars is truly fascinating. The hardships he faced while making ,funding SpaceX and facing the problems such as failed tests is very remarkable to see as in the end he was able overcome every problem which shows hard work and passion does pay off in the end.
