  1. NONRENEWABLE ANDRENEWABLERESOURCES

  2. RENEWABLE OR NONRENEWABLE Energy resources are limited and are either renewable or nonrenewable Renewable Renewable Nonrenewable Nonrenewable There are advantages and disadvantages to using any energy source The use of any energy resource carries an environmental cost that must be weighed against economic benefit

  3. HMMMM.... What do you think nonrenewable resources are? Break it down... Nonrenewable? Resource?

  4. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a scale comparable to its consumption.

  5. NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

  6. COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

  7. HOW IS COAL MADE ???

  8. HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???

  9. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?

  10. 1. The solid fossil fuel is COAL (made from swamp plants) Burning coal causes the most pollution and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which is responsible for global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere traps the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution

  11. Burning coal also causes acid rain when sulfur dioxide (SO2) is released into the atmosphere Trees killed in the Smokey Mtns.

  12. 2. The liquid fossil fuel is OIL..Also known as petroleum (made from buried remains of ocean animals and plants) Specific fuels made from oil are gasoline, jet fuel, kerosene, diesel fuel, and fuel oil Automobiles are the second largest source of carbon dioxide pollution in the U.S.

  13. 3. The gas fossil fuel is NATURAL GAS Butane (Made from buried remains of ocean animals and plants) Methane, butane, and propane are made from natural gas Methane

  14. HMMMM.... If nonrenewable resources are resources that cannot be re-made at a scale comparable to its consumption, what are renewable resources?

  15. RENEWABLE RESOURCES can be replenished over a short period of time (months, years or decades)---close to the rate at which they are used • Include vegetation, sunlight, and surface water

  16. SOLAR Energy from the sun. Why is energy from the sun renewable?

  17. GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Why is energy from the heat of the Earth renewable?

  18. WIND Energy from the wind. Why is energy from the wind renewable?

  19. BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. Why is energy from biomass renewable?

  20. WATER or HYDROELECTRIC Energy from the flow of water. Why is energy of flowing water renewable?

  21. SUMMARY What are the differences between nonrenewable and renewable resources?
