Nonrenewable and Renewable Energy Resources SPH4C – April 2010
Energy Resources in Canada • Highest per capita consumers of energy in the world. • Energy from • Fossil Fuels • Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas • Nuclear Energy • Hydraulic Energy
Energy Resources • Energy Resource • Raw material obtained from nature that can be used to do work. • Renewable Resource • Resource that renews itself in a normal human lifetime. • Nonrenewable Resource • Resource that does not renew itself in a normal human lifetime.
Nonrenewable Energy Resources • Fossil Fuels
Nuclear Fission • Source of energy that is not a fossil fuel • Uranium • Nucleus of an atom is split, either naturally or being bombarded with other particles that make it split, the energy released from the controlled reaction can be used to heat water and produce steam. • CANDU Reactor • CANadian in design, uses Deuterium oxide (heavy water), and ordinary Uranium as fuel.
Renewable Energy Sources • Earth’s supplies of fossil fuels and uranium are limited. • Need to develop devices to transform energy from renewable sources into energy we can use.
