  8. Rise of Christianity • The Jewish Diaspora refers to the movement of Jews out of traditional lands to other parts of the world. • The Jews were forced out of Palestine when there homeland and temples were destroyed by the Romans in 70 AD

Rise of Christianity • Judea was a province of Rome; Jews were banned from living in Jerusalem • A Jewish group called Zealotsrefused to accept Roman rule. • The Zealots were conservatives that strict obedience to Jewish law and rejected foreign influences • Many believed that God would soon send a messiah, an anointed king, who would lead them to freedom from Rome

  11. Rise of Christianity • As turmoil engulfed the Jews, a new religion, Christianity, was born amid followers of Jesus. • Jesus taught simple lessons, often using parables. • Sermon on the Mount: ethical themes of mercy and sympathy for the poor and helpless.

Rise of Christianity • Jesus was betrayed by one of his disciples, arrested by the Romans, and condemned to die by crucifixion. • According to the Gospels, after his death Jesus returned and spoke to his disciples. He commanded them to continue to preach his message, and then ascended to heaven.
