Changes in the Social Security Card • Card will have several new easil recognizable security features • Color Shifting Ink • Latent Image • Information Campaign for Employers • Possible changes to verification routines • Future ability to verify card issue date and control number as well as traditional items
Limits on Replacement Cards • Previously unlimited • Now limited to 3 per year and 10 per lifetime • Several exceptions for good cause • If needed to obtain a benefit (including employment) • Employer will be asked to provide a letter documenting the offer of employment • SSA may contact employer to verify
Verification of Birth Certificates • Verification for those under age 1 • Little impact on employment • May impact on ability to claim tax deduction in limited cases
Verification of Identity Documents • SSA now has preferred documents • U.S. Drivers License or state issued ID card • U.S. passport • Must be produced if they are available or can be obtained/replaced within 10 days • May produce slight delays in individual’s obtaining social security cards
