  1. Sustaining Progress Victoria Bhavsar Teaching and Academic Support Center Based on: Professors as Writers: A Self-Help Guide to Productive Writing by Robert Boice

  2. Why We Don’t Write • It’s… • I’m… • They…

  3. Four Basic Ideas • Write often. • Write uncritically. • Write with “boundaries.” • Write with friends. Barbara Kingsolver

  4. Write Often Make writing a priority. Creative work results from practice and sustained effort. Jhumpa Lahiri

  5. Write Often • Make a special space for writing. • Minimize distractions. • Use a Pavlovian “cue” to begin. • Schedule your time in your calendar. • Schedule half-hours, not hours and hours. • Begin writing on time, even if you don’t feel like it.

  6. Write Often • Hold yourself accountable for writing. • Keep a visible record of writing.

  7. Write Uncritically Just write. Don’t talk to yourself…at first. Gabriel Garcia Marquez

  8. Write Uncritically Spontaneous writing. “The idea is to write for 10 minutes, more or less. Don’t stop for anything. Go quickly without rushing. Don’t look back or cross out. Don’t stop to think about what you are doing or what word to use. If you can’t think of a thought, write Idon’tknow Idon’tknow. If you can’t think of a word, put in a squiggle.” Peter Elbow, 1973

  9. Write Uncritically Generative writing. GW is similar to spontaneous writing in that you do not stop to critique. You do write about a specific topic relevant to your project or discipline.

  10. Writing Critically At some point, you have to turn generative writing into finished projects. If you have NOT critiqued yourself while generating ideas, you will have lots of ideas to work with that are worth developing further.

  11. Write with “Boundaries” All living things have boundaries. Stop writing. Isaac Asimov

  12. Write with “Boundaries” • Set a writing task or a goal for the day. • Stop when you are finished, or… • Stop when your time is up. • Do not write until you are exhausted and disgruntled.

  13. Write with Friends Share. Writing is a social act. Nikki Giovanni

  14. Write with Friends • Regular writing meetings. • Idea sharing. • Reading drafts and feedback. • Collaboration. • Accountability.

  15. The Daily Journal Write from other writers. True ease in writing comes from art, not chance, As those move easiest who have learn’d to dance. Alexander Pope. Essay on Criticism.
