  2. History • Christmas 1979, the Soviet Union invade Afghanistan to expand the Soviet empire and to further spread communism • Communism goes agenst the islamic teachings of god and creates a Ghad (holy war) with the help of Iran and Pakistan

  3. US take on things • The US saw this as a threat to National Security and its economy due to the fact that Afghanistan Gulf had oil rigs and shipping ports. • Because the US, JimmyCarter, and Ronald Reagan were agents communism, they spent no expense at making sure that the communists didn’t take Afghanistan.

  4. US intervention • The US never touched Afgan soil to fight, how ever they did supply weapons, ammo, and other supplies including th brand new Stinger Missile. • As well, they also supplied the funds to pay for this as well as give the weapons to Iran and Pakistan.

  5. US continues • Sevral times the US had recived word that the USSR was willing to nogotiate for withdraw. The Soviets were losing the war and many of its soldiers were deprived of the spirit to fight. The US kept the war continuing until the Soviets surrendered and left.

  6. UN • The UN came up with a diplomatic solution to this was. If the US told the mujaheddin to stop fighting, then the USSR would pull out. • Both sides didnt like this so the war raged on.

  7. The US wanted to stop the spread of communism, and so with this war, they were actually controlling Afghanistan • This war had the goals of the US but was fought in Afghan blood.

  8. With the US support of the mujaheddin, the moral of the soldiers was boosted. • The arms the US supplied came from china, the US, Egypt, Czechoslovakia, and curpt USSR stations. • While fighting the Afghans took choppers from the soviets, however they always fought among them selves rendering the choppers useless

  9. Regans policy • RR's policy helped to step up the Afghans military support. He saw America as the good guys and the communists as the bad guys, and would stop at nothing to prevent communism epically in a key country.

  10. The Afghans • Even tthough the Afghans were fighting the same enemy.. Many were tribal and fought each other over weapons, positions, and what to do.

  11. USSR down fall • In Afghan, there was power changes constantly because the guys in Moscow didn’t think that certain leaders had the ability to hold Afghan.

  12. US Afghan moral boost • Zbigniew Brzezinski the national security adviser at the time visited Afghan to boost the moral of the Mujaheddin using terms they were familiar with.

  13. End War • When the war ended, the soviet union withdrew from Afghan just like the US with Vietnam, the soviet union's moral was hurt bad just like the US before, even after the Afghans didn’t let up on the fighting for god.
