What is Figurative Language? • Whenever you describe something by comparing it with something else, you are using figurative language. • The most common figures of speech are simile, metaphor, and alliteration.
Simile • A way of describing something by comparing it with something else using the words “like” or “as”
Examples • I am hungry as a horse. • You run like a rabbit. • She is as happy as a clam.
Metaphor: • a figure of speech that says that one thing is another different thing
Examples of Metaphors • Her home was a prison. • He is a real pig when he eats. • The assignment was a breeze!
Personification • is giving human qualities to something that is not human
Examples of personification • The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky • The run down house appeared sad. • The thunder grumbled like an old man. • The fire ran wild.
Alliteration • Repetition of a particular sound in the first syllables in a series of words
Examples of Alliteration • Alice’s aunt ate apples and acorns around August • Carries cat clawed her couch, creating chaos. • Sara’s seven sisters slept soundly in sand
