  3. New Moon: • A New Moon occurs when the moon is directly in front of the Earth, blocking it from the sun • When this happens, the light is hidden from view on Earth, and the moon appears to be all dark

  4. Waxing Crescent: • A Waxing Crescent occurs when the moon has rotated slightly around Earth and some light can be reflected onto Earth from the Sun

  5. First Quarter: • A First Quarter Moon occurs when the Sun’s light is reflected so that half of the moon appears dark, and half appears light • The moon is at a 90 degree angle with the Earth and Sun

  6. Waxing Gibbous: • A Waxing Gibbous occurs when the moon has rotated almost directly behind Earth, and much more of the Sun’s light is being reflected to Earth • The reflected brightness continues to grow

  7. Full Moon: • A Full Moon is when all of the moon is lit-up (by the reflection of the Sun’s rays) • A Full Moon occurs when the moon is directly behind the Earth, and all of the Sun’s rays reflect off-of the part of the moon which faces Earth

  8. Waning Gibbous: • A Waning Gibbous occurs when the moon’s rotation slowly starts to block the Sun’s light from being reflected onto Earth • The moon slowly starts to gain darkness

  9. Third Quarter: • A Third Quarter Moon occurs when the moon is again at a 90 degree angle with the Earth and Sun, but this time on the opposite side of Earth • The darkness continues to grow on the moon

  10. Waning Crescent: • A Waning Crescent is the final phase of the moon before restarting and becoming a New Moon • The darkness has greatly increased, and the moon is almost directly in front of the Earth, blocking out the Sun

  11. Fun Fact: • During a New Moon, there is not always an occurring Solar Eclipse because the moon’s orbit around Earth is tilted 5 degrees to Earth’s orbit around the Sun • Therefore, just because there is a Full Moon, doesn’t mean there is an occurring Solar Eclipse
