What Causes the Phases of the Moon? • As the moon revolves around the Earth, it looks like the amount of light reflected from the Sun changes
Revolution… The moon’s revolution around the Earth is: 1.in a counter clockwise direction (from right to left) 2. cyclic and predictable • What does cyclic mean?
What does cyclic mean? Cyclic: means a repeated pattern… we see this as moon phases • One lunar phase cycle = 29 ½ days (new moon to new moon) 29 ½ days = about one month = about 4 weeks
So… to move from New Moon to First Quarter, it takes about one week
