SOLID WASTE Strategy 1 – Provide Comprehensive Solid Waste & Recycling Services For Residential, Business, and Institutional Customers • Operations: Provides collection of recyclables, solid, and vegetative waste throughout unincorporated Lee County, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers Beach through competitively bid franchise contracts. Includes customer service, public information, contract monitoring, and solid waste ordinance enforcement. • Disposal: Provides disposal of municipal solid waste, biosolids, and yard waste in an environmentally acceptable manner in accordance with State law, Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regulations, and public health requirements. Manages disposal facilities, including the Waste To Energy (WTE) facility, the Lee/Hendry landfill, a composting facility, and three transfer stations. Manages long term disposal contracts to assure efficient and environmentally sound operations. • Recycling: Provide public education and material processing/recycling for all residential, multi-family, businesses, and construction projects that participate in the County’s recycling programs. Manage facilities’ operations and maintenance. GOAL: Ensure the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens of Lee County by providing a responsible and economical solid waste management system.
SOLID WASTE Strategy 1 – Provide Comprehensive Solid Waste & Recycling Services For Residential, Business, and Institutional Customers cont’d • Household Chemical Waste: Provide collection, recycling, and disposal of chemical materials from households throughout the county at a permanent drop-off facility. Provide one annual mobile collection event in Cape Coral and one in Bonita Springs. Provide education and information on proper handling, recycling or disposal of waste oils, car batteries, and syringes and other household chemicals. Provide curbside collection and disposal of household electronics (e-waste). • Right Of Way Program: Provides clean up of illegally dumped material on County and other rights-of-way in the unincorporated area, Bonita Springs, and Fort Myers Beach. Provides emergency removal of debris following authorization. GOAL: Ensure the health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens of Lee County by providing a responsible and economical solid waste management system.
