Fahrenheit 451 The Salamander
Definition • 1. Any tailed amphibian of the order Caudata, having a soft, moist, scalelessskin, typically aquatic as a larva and semiterrestrial as an adult: several species are endangered. • 2. A mythical being, especially a lizard or other reptile, thought to be able to live in fire.
Text Reference 1 • “She seemed hypnotized by the salamander on his arm…” (Bradbury 6) • When Clarisse saw the salamander on Montag’s arm, she instantly knew that he was a firefighter, and that it was his job to burn and destroy books, to protect the ideals of society that they live in.
Text Reference 2 • “They sat there looking out of the great salamander as they turned a corner and went silently on.” (Bradbury 40) • The salamander is the truck that the firefighters drive. It is called that because it symbolizes fire, also symbolizing the kerosene it carries to burn the homes of people that violate the anti-book laws
Text Reference 3 • “ He stood in the hall of his house, putting on the badge with the orange salamander burring across it“ • The salamander on the badge symbolizes the firemen‘s job to destroy the books and the people that collect them
The Hearth and The Home • The hearth is the place where families cook, eat and sit around. Montag’s home doesn't have a “hearth.” He and Mildred don’t share any space with each other, they don’t even eat meals together. To “keep the home fires burning” in this society, the firefighters have to destroy anything that causes unrest. So the books that give people an intellectual advantage over other people must be removed to keep the peace.
