2. Appearance • There are two distinct color morphs of the Southern Red Backed salamder. • The Striped morp has a dark gray or brown base color with an orange or red stripe.

3. Habitat • These salamanders are found in the mountain of northwestern North Carolina.

4. Diet centipede • A red backed primarily consumes a varity of small invertebratessuch as: • Mites, spiders, insects, centipedes, millipedes, beetles, snails, ants earthworms, flies and larvae.

5. Reproduction • A Red backed salamder lay their eggs in underground burrows , leaf litter or under rocks and logs.

6. Additional Information • Red backed salamanders help humans by controlling insect population. • Scientific name: Plethodon cinereus • In the winter, red backs bury themselves in a rock crevice or climb "down under" about 15 inches in decaying roots in the soil.
