The Land Promise To Abram Gen. 12:1-3; 15:18; 17:8
The Promise Renewed • To Isaac, Gen. 26:1-4 • To Jacob, Gen. 28:1-4 • To Israel, Ex. 19:3-6 • Retention was conditional, Dt. 30:1-10 • (Everlasting: incense, Ex. 30:8; Sabbath, 31:16; priesthood, 40:15)
What About Modern Israel? • “The foundation of the state of Israel in recent years has been a part of the predicted regathering of scattered Israel back to their ancient land…The present partial possession of the land is a token. The complete possession awaits the coming of Israel’s Redeemer” (Walvoord, pg. 185,186).
Hal Lindsey • “The same prophets who predicted the world-wide exile and persecution of the Jews also predicted their restoration as a nation…This restoration was to come about in the general time of the climactic seven-year countdown and its finale – the appearance of the Messiah to deliver the new state from destruction” (The Late Great Planet Earth, pg. 37,38).
The Word from Jerusalem • “It is God who has a claim to Jerusalem, not Judaism, or Christianity or Islam. And He’s decided to give it to Israel as an inheritance…When you deny the Jewish people sovereignty over Jerusalem, it’s like telling God to get off His throne because you think you’ve figured out a better way to run the universe…On that day, He will rule and reign from Zion for eternity” (International Christian Embassy Jer. p. 7).
The Promise Fulfilled • Josh. 21:43-45 – “So the Lord gave Israel all the land of which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they took possession of it and dwelt in it. The Lord gave them rest all around, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers. And not a man of all their enemies stood against them; the Lord delivered all their enemies into their hand. Not a word failed of any good thing which the Lord had spoken to the house of Israel. All came to pass.”
A Warning, Josh. 23:15,16 • “Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all the good things have come upon you which the Lord your God promised you, so the Lord will bring upon you all harmful things, until He has destroyed you from this good land which the Lord your God has given you. When you have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed down to them, then the anger of the Lord will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from the good land which He has given you.”
Cities of Refuge • Israel was to separate three cities of refuge, then if God gave them all the land, they were to add three more cities, Dt. 19:7-9. • Joshua 20:7-9 listed six cities of refuge – Kadesh, Shechem, Hebron, Bezer, Ramoth, and Golan. • Therefore God gave them all the land.
Solomon Ruled It • Boundaries of the land promised: “from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates,” Gen. 15:18. • Solomon “reigned over all kingdoms from the River to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt,” 1 Kgs. 4:21.
Nehemiah Confirmed • “You are the Lord God, who chose Abram, and brought him out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name Abraham; You found his heart faithful before You, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittities, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites – To give it to his descendants. You have performed Your words, For You are righteous,” Neh. 9:7,8.
A Remnant to Return • If they turned from the Lord, He would remove them from the land, Josh. 23:16 • Israel – into Assyrian capt. 721 B.C.; Judah into Babylonian, 586 B.C. • Would return under the law, Dt. 30:10 • Neh. 1:8,9 – “If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to Me, and keep Mycommandments…I will gather them from there…”
A Remnant Returned • Isaiah (740-680) predicted physical remnant (10:21-23; 44:28) • Fulfilled (536): Ezra 1:1-4; 2:2,64,65 • Ezra 7:12,13; Nehemiah 1:8,9; 2:5,6 • Isaiah predicted spiritual remnant, (11:9-11; 2:1-4) • Fulfilled (30 A.D.) Rom.11:5; 1 Tim. 3:15
National Distinctions Destroyed • “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise,” Gal. 3:28,29. • “He is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit and not in the letter,” Rom. 2:28,29.
Conclusion • We are circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, Col. 2:11,12 • “Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh…Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new,” 2 Cor. 5:16,17. • All in Christ are promised a home – but not on earth! 1 Cor. 15:22-26
