ouldyou do it? I am SURE you would!
nfortunately, I don’t have a way to COMPLETELY stop procrastination. Something I do have is…
HAT I LEARNED IN earning how to Learn
- Overcoming Procrastination • - Overwriting • Bad Habits • - Focusing on the • Process not the Product • - Interleaving
ccording to Merrian-Webster.com, Procrastinate is: ‘to be slow or late about doing something that should be done.’
ccording to Dr. Oakley, it is a temporary relief to stress. One that ultimately cause more stress and frustration. It is also something I grapple with on an all too frequent basis.
rocrastination can be tackled by using a few techniques. One good one is the ‘Pomodoro.’ Stop all distractions & focus intently on the subject at hand for 25 full minutes. Then have a reward for your effort!
he REWARD is important in overwriting bad habits. I’ve learned that habits have 4 components: 1.) The Cue 2.) The Routine 3.) The Reward & 4.) The Belief. BELIEVE that you can change! That is essential.
verwriting bad habits is a part of erasing procrastination. Identify the cue to the undesirable habit. Change the routine of that habit. Give yourself a reward for changing. And always believe that you can change.
You can do it!!! Believe in YOU!
nother important idea that I learned was to focus on the process and not the product. This idea reminded me of a statement I had heard before. “Art is a process, not a product.”
he process is the habits and actions associated with the flow of time. This was stated in video lecture 3 from week 3. Make time flowing by your friend. The product triggers the pain areas of the brain associated with procrastination
ocusing on the process rather than the product was an idea that I kept on the back burner of my mind ever since I first heard the statement, ‘Art is a process, not a product. This experience leads me to my next concept…
nterleaving • According to Merriam- • Webster.com, interleaving • is adding sheets or leaves • to a book. • In the context of education, Interleaving is a variable approach to learning.
he variable approach means that multiple ideas and information are practiced all mixed together. According to the video lectures and gocognitive.net it has much better long-term outcomes for remembering than more basic ways of remembering
emembering the saying about art and process makes me think of interleaving because I made a connection between something I learned recently and something I learned many years ago. To me that seemed like a type of interleaving.
t was GREAT to realize that connection and put it together in my thoughts. It made the class more visceral and EXCITING to me.
hat in turn made me aware of the journey of learning that I am on right now. How these seemingly unrelated ideas are actually relatable and can apply to other areas of life. From making new study habits to having better interaction with others.
