An email from Chris Stanley: • Hello Wulf, • Thanks for your message and your interest in the jadarite-kryptonite story. • We were in the process of writing the paper describing the new mineral jadarite when I started to look for possible synthetic analogues in the nuclear industry. I was aware that lithium borosilicates for example had been tested for use in glasses that could hold radionuclides. • I typed sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide into a google search and was astonished when the nearest matches came back as kryptonite. • Of course, I realized immediately that we had to co-ordinate the various press offices and make a bit of a media splash about it. • I attach the Rio Tinto newsletter and it even made it to Vanity Fair!! • Let me know if you need more • Best wishes • Chris

The story has it that fictitious kryptonite is composed of "sodium lithium boron silicate hydroxide with fluorine“. This is very close to jadarite, which, however, does not contain fluorine. • According to the many series of the comic story there are many colours for kryptonite, but the most common one seems to be the green one.
