Chapter 4 Driving System
Three Skills of the Driving Task • Physical coordination with the vehicle • Social interaction with other highway user • Mental • Understanding the motor vehicle • Perception based on stored knowledge • Understanding traffic laws • Judging time/space relationship • Concentration on task
90-95% of accidents are cause by human error Young people tend to make many unsafe driving acts. These include driving too close inattention/distraction right of way violation sign non-observance over estimating their ability while under estimating the risk
Four things necessary for safe driving • Traction • Proper tread-need 2/32 tread • Proper inflation • Traction in curves, dirt roads, wet road, etc
Safe Driver cont… 2. Time • Maintain a 3 second following distance • Stopping so you can see the tires of the vehicle ahead of you • It takes approximately 30,000 miles of driving to become an average driver
Safe Driving cont… 3. Space • Maintain a 3 second following distance • Stopping so you can see the tires of the vehicle ahead of you
Safe Driving cont.. 4. Visibility • The ability to see clearly, both near and far • 20/40 • Windows and mirrors clean • Reduce glare • Fog
Safe Following Distance • Following distance should be two to three seconds under ideal conditions • For a three seconds following distance: • When the back bumper of the car in front of you is even with a stationary object on the side of the road. Begin counting: one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three; if you car’s front bumper is even with the same object: you’ve met your goal. If not adjust your speed • For every hazard, increase time and distance
How to deal with a driver following too close • Increase your following distance so you do not need to make any sudden stops • Move over/change lanes • Slow down/pull over encouraging them to pass • Tap your brake lights to alert the driver behind • Signal your turns early/slow down early • Don’t anger the following driver
Ways to Communicate • Horn • Lights • Hand motion • Turn signal • Brake lights • Hazard lights
