  3. 90-95% of accidents are cause by human error Young people tend to make many unsafe driving acts. These include driving too close inattention/distraction right of way violation sign non-observance over estimating their ability while under estimating the risk

  4. Four things necessary for safe driving • Traction • Proper tread-need 2/32 tread • Proper inflation • Traction in curves, dirt roads, wet road, etc

  5. Safe Driver cont… 2. Time • Maintain a 3 second following distance • Stopping so you can see the tires of the vehicle ahead of you • It takes approximately 30,000 miles of driving to become an average driver

Safe Following Distance • Following distance should be two to three seconds under ideal conditions • For a three seconds following distance: • When the back bumper of the car in front of you is even with a stationary object on the side of the road. Begin counting: one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three; if you car’s front bumper is even with the same object: you’ve met your goal. If not adjust your speed • For every hazard, increase time and distance

How to deal with a driver following too close • Increase your following distance so you do not need to make any sudden stops • Move over/change lanes • Slow down/pull over encouraging them to pass • Tap your brake lights to alert the driver behind • Signal your turns early/slow down early • Don’t anger the following driver
