The History of the Internet • Where did the Internet originate? From an Idea of course!
In 1962 the first “Internet” is conceived. Under the leadership of the Department of Defense’s Advanced Research Project Agency, a small network is created called ARPANET ARPANET was originally created for the Department of Defense and the military to allow control over its missiles and bombers from various locations after a nuclear attack.
In 1969 ARPANET connects the first 4 Universities. Standford Research Institute, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah created the first hosts of ARPANET. • One of the most important developments occurred in 1972. The first E-mail program was created by Ray Tomlinson.
1974-1981 • The general public gets the first hint of how networked computers can be used in daily life as the commercial version of ARPANET goes on Online. • 1979- USENET users groups are created. • ARPANET starts its descend from its military and research roots. • In 1981 ARPANET had expanded to 213 hosts
1982-1987 • Bob Karn, Vint Cerf, and other team members create TCP/IP, the common language of the Internet. TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol. • 1982- THE TERM “INTERNET” IS USED FOR THE FIRST TIME! • For the first time the loose collection of networks originally seen as ARPANET is viewed as the Internet.
1988- The “Internet Worm” is unleashed. The worm temporarily disabled 6,000 of the 60,000 internet hosts. • The worm incident raises important concerns about privacy and security in the Internet world. • 1990- The number of Internet hosts exceed 300,000 • In 1991, The World Wide Web is born.
1992- One millions hosts have multi-media access to the Internet. • 1993- Mosaic, the first graphics-based web browser is available. • 1994- The first concert is broadcasted on-line via the Internet by the Rolling Stones. Also Pizza Hut accepts on-line pizza orders for the first time.
The Late 90’s • 1995- Sun Microsystems release an Internet Programming language called Java. Java, today, is the most widely used programming language. • In 1996, the number of computer hosts approaches 10 million. • As of 1997, the Internet is an increasingly important part of life all over the world and continues to be today.
The Future • As for the future, the Internet world will continue to improve and expand each day, for no one is certain of its capabilities.
