Incredible Invention Surfaces in China!
This guy was responsible for that invention! Ts’ai Lun was the “father” of modern fiber paper. (Image: Wikipedia)
Durning the Tang Dynasty (608-907 AD), Ts’ai Lun took the inner bark of a mulberry tree and bamboo fibers, mixed them with water, and pounded them with a wooden tool. He then poured this mixture onto a flat piece of coarsely woven cloth and let the water drain through, leaving only the fibers on the cloth. Once dry, Ts'ai Lun discovered that he had created a quality writing surface that was relatively easy to make and lightweight. These pictures show how the paper was made.
Chinese people used to make clothes out of paper!
Don’t you think that paper money is a lot easier to carry than a lot of coins! Images: wikipedia
After paper was invented, keeping records was easier. Which one would you rather carry? Which one would be easier to store? Which one makes storing records easier? In 1045 AD, Bi Sheng invented moveable type. Three hundred years later in Europe, Gutenberg's development of moveable type revolutionized the Western world. Why? The Chinese language uses 3000 to 5000 characters in an average newspaper. The English language, in comparison, uses 26 characters in an average newspaper. It takes a lot longer to put the letters for the Chinese paper together. But, the Chinese still invented it first, so it was their contribution to modern society! Paper is only one invention that changed modern society. What would society be like without paper? We would have need bigger libraries to hold all the books made on stone tablets. The library would have less books because it would take too much time to make just one book. Your birthday card would be so heavy that Grandma would not be able to afford to send it. Your purse would be very heavy and you would probably not be able to carry a wallet.
