Networks in VMware • 10 virtualswitches VMnet0 … VMnet9, forbuildingupto 10 independentnetworks. • Bydefault 2 virtualnetworkcards on thehost: • VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 (bridged) • VMware Network Adapter VMnet8 (NAT) • Upto 4 virtualnetworkadapters per guest. • VMware DHCP servicerunning on thehost. • VMwareNAT servicerunning on thehost.
Typesof Network Adapters • Host-only:Connectsvirtualmachinesandthehostwithoutaccesstothephysical LAN. Uses VMnet1 bydefault. • Bridged:Connectedtothe LAN via a physicaladapterofthehostas a separate computerwithitsown IP address. • NAT(Network Address Translation):Usesthehost IP addresstoaccessthe LAN fromtheguests. The guestsremain invisible fromthe LAN. Uses VMnet8 bydefault. • Custom:Internal networks, usingoneofthe 10 virtualswitches.
Cloning Virtual Machines • VMware Workstation cancreateclones in 2 ways: • Fullclone: Is a copyofthe original virtualmachine. • Linkedclone: • usesthediskofthe original VM in read-onlymode, • writesto a Redo-Log. • WithVMware Server, youhavetouse a trick: • Create thebasevirtualmachine. • Write-protectthevirtualdiskofthebase VM. • Create a new VM in Custom Mode. Specifythewrite-protecteddisk in „Use an existingvirtualdisk“. • Create a snapshotofthenew VM. Changestothedisk will thenbewrittento a Redo-Log.
