  1. UCAS- MIAP Pilot Evaluating Benefits for Applicants and HEIs • The UCAS vision for MIAP (Mary Curnock Cook) • Outline of the UCAS-MIAP Pilot (Geoff Ramshaw) • The trial User Interface (Andi Ching) • The story so far, and where we go next (Geoff Ramshaw)

  2. UCAS Pilot: Testing the Personal Learning Record; Evaluating Benefits • Aims • Evaluate benefits for applicants and HEIs of obtaining Personal Learning Record (PLR) data • Test the MIAP Personal Learning Record Service

  3. UCAS Pilot: Testing the PLR; Evaluating Benefits • HEI Benefits • HEIs more confident in an applicant’s personal details • HEIs will save time checking applicants’ unverified qualifications • HEIs will receive more accurate qualification data • Applicant and School Benefits • Apply will ‘look up’ the PLR - easier to use for applicants • Applicants will save time in checking previous qualifications • School staff will save time used in helping them do this • Applicants will be more confident in what goes into Apply

  4. UCAS Pilot: Evaluating Benefits: A staged approach • Stage 1 January-April 2010 • Set up and test web-services link between UCAS and the MIAP PLR • Verify learner details against PLR, on sample from UCAS Apply for 2010 entry • Verify ULN or obtain existing ULN where not supplied

  5. UCAS Pilot: Evaluating Benefits: A staged approach • Stage 1 January-April 2010 • Obtain sample of verified applicant qualification (GCSE) data for 2010 entry • Compare verified qualification data from the MIAP PLR with data entered into Apply • General comparison • Specific comparison for Pilot HEIs

  6. UCAS Pilot: Evaluating Benefits: A staged approach • Stage 2 March-May 2010 • Develop trial version of UCAS Apply, to be used by volunteer applicants • Incorporate a live link to the PLR system - verify applicant and obtain verified qualification (GCSE) data to populate test version of Apply • Work with a sample of applicants to evaluate the trial Apply

  7. UCAS Pilot: Key Questions • How well does the UCAS- MIAP PLR interface perform? • How good is the UCAS/PLR match of learner demographic and school data? • How does learner achievement data in the PLR compare with data entered by the learner in to Apply? • Can we pre-populate a test version of Apply with the data? • What is the experience of volunteer learners in using this test Apply?

  8. UCAS Pilot: Key Issue 1 • How valuable would verified Level 2 qualification data be to HEIs compared with current data entry by applicants?

  9. UCAS Pilots: What happens next? • In the actual process (not in pilot): • Application is submitted by the Applicant • The application subsequently becomes available through the link products to HEI • The data will now have the “verified” status attached to the qualifications

  10. UCAS Pilot: Key Issue 2 • Please comment on the User Interface

  11. UCAS Pilot: What we’ve done Established a link to the MIAP PLR system Designed UCAS web application (Web Client) to send data to and receive data from the MIAP PLR system Set up a Web Client database to store data retrieved from the MIAP PLR Begun to receive anonymised applicant data from the PLR to build and test the interface Designed a trial Apply interface suitable for evaluation by schools Contacted schools to ask for volunteers to evaluate the trial Apply

  12. UCAS Pilot: What we’ve still to do Share real applicant data with the MIAP PLR Evaluate matching of applicant personal data Retrieve qualification data from the MIAP PLR Evaluate overall performance of the UCAS-MIAP link Compare verified qualification data from the MIAP PLR with data entered into Apply Evaluate real-time population of Apply with verified data Try out the trial Apply interface with schools

  13. UCAS Pilot: Key Issues for workshop • How valuable would verified Level 2 qualification data be to HEIs compared with current data entry by applicants? • Please comment on the User Interface Questions
