China’s Reverse Engineering By SN Bennett
What is Reverse Engineering? • Reverse engineering is the process of discovering the technological principles of a device, object or system through analysis of its structure, function and operation. It often involves taking something (e.g. a mechanical device, electronic component, or software program) apart and analyzing its workings in detail, used in maintenance or to try to make a new device or program that does the same thing without copying anything from the original.
So why does it matter? • Interoperability • Creation of unlicensed/unapproved duplicates • Removal of copy protection, and access restrictions • Product analysis • Lost documentation • Security auditing • Academic/learning purposes
So how does China fit into this? • Great leap • Sino-Soviet Split • The Chinese economic reform
1984 Chinese “Products” • First-generation ICBM R-7 (DF (Dongfeng)-5) • First-generation satellite • First-generation nuclear strategic submarine (Xia class) • First-generation nuclear attack submarine (Han class) • Second-generation diesel-electric submarine (Ming class) • First- and second-generation destroyers, frigates and patrol craft • Second-generation fighter MiG-21 (J-7) and first-generation bomber TU-28 (H-6) • First-generation air-defense missile system S-75 (HQ (Hongqi)-2)
2001 • J-11 • J-10 FC-1 • FBC-1 • Hongniao (HN)-series long range land-attack cruise missiles • The "093" class nuclear attack submarine and "094" class strategic submarine
Great Leap Forward • Started in 1958 by Mao Zedong • Lasted for 5 years • Left China economically weak • 23-40 million people died to famine • This was “Great Leap Back”
So how does China fit into this? • Great leap • Sino-Soviet Split • The Chinese economic reform
Sino Soviet Split • Started in 1950 • 1968 - 69 – unofficially ended • 1979 – officially ended • The Treaty gave China access to Russia’s military, strategy and equipment, they were also subjected to communistic ideal’s and allowed Russia to use a Chinese port.
So how does China fit into this? • Great leap • Sino-Soviet Split • The Chinese economic reform
The Chinese economic reform • Started in 1979 • The Chinese economic reform was the “fix” to the disastrous Great Leap. It was a set of laws set in place to give immediate aid to the people.
